SINGAPORE: Of the six full-time madrasahs, four have met the PSLE benchmark this year set by the Ministry of Education.

PLEASE tell me again  how the Joint Madrasah System (JMS) is helping the madrasah succeed in the PSLE exams? Three of the non-JMS madrasahs met the MOE's benchmark, at least one of them consistently thru the years.

Two of the JMS madrasahs FAILED to make the mark, one of them consistently. This, despite the fact that the JMS madrasahs are getting more funding and support from MUIS. That includes MUIS senior staff seconded to manage these JMS madrasahs.Funding, I might add, that came from the community.

Indeed, the JMS is a highly DISCRIMINATORY system and the community is indirectly complicit (subhat) in this discrimination.

The JMS is discriminatory because the madrasahs are not getting extra funding and support because of need, or because of their success, but simply because of their membership in JMS.

After 8-9 years of discrimination and pathetic results to show, it's time we get rid of the JMS.

The difference between the JMS madrasahs and the non-JMS are similar to students of non product of Mendaki against students of Mendaki product.
The 2011 TOP Malay/Muslim GCE 'O' level students are not the product of Mendaki, but of self confidence and independence with the full support of family. To have Mendaki boasting everytime the Malay/Muslim achieve excellence is pathetic. With whatever ways and means, we know Mendaki will take in these top students to serve their cause, and we are left to taking care of the worst cohort among the community. So please do not 'kidnap' our top 'anak bangsa' for 'your' own good and to serve only 'YOU'.
So scrap the JMS madrasah system, let all the Madrasahs be independent and excell in its own merit. We have proof to Singaopore that without any government statutory board intervention, we have achieve and excell even better. InsyaAllah.

I am from a non-jms mardrasah. My school does not have enough resources to be "independent". Lots of its students have potential but can't explore and develop it as there is lack of resources such as funding for good teachers and workshops to develop creativity. To meet this needs, the school fees have to be risen. The students also have to pay a hefty sum for the notes/exercises given by their teachers. Sometimes, caring teachers burn a hole in their pocket to help the students. The p6s are stressed out in meeting the benchmark so that the school does not eventually close down. Because of this, many pupils from non-jms schools change to jms schools as that would be lighter on them and also their parents.
My sis is from a jms madrasah. Her fees are so much lesser than mine. She gets assesment books for free. She is not under a lot of pressure to help the school reach the benchmark for PSLE.
jms won't be needed if the Muslim community help us in supporting fund raising events held by the madrasahs.

Assalamualaikum.,

Personally I feel that the JMS scheme should be extended to ALL Madrasahs. And that much more stringent criteria be set on Madrasahs. What is the whole point of the Madrasahs ? If we want to produce Asatizahs - then we do NOT need so many Madrsahs to begin with. Moreover we need an INCLUSIVE environment for our Madrsahs.

The way I see it - the JMS does NOT go FAR ENOUGH to fix our Madrasahs. We need to get all of them on board a fixed system and with a stringent entry requirement.

Dr Syed Alwi

6 madrasahs is considered little. Madrasah not only produce asatizahs, but it also produce lots of university graduates in the academic field that are also strong in their religion.
Our mission is to spread Islam. One of the ways to achieve that is to show that being religious does not make you backword in society. It could make you advance far ahead of the non-practicing Muslims who are not as knowledgable in their religion.
